How to combat food allergy at school?

Allergies can sometimes be quite severe and can occur in people of almost all age groups. Children can also suffer from various types of allergies such as pet, seasonal and food allergies, but at the same time, it is important to take care of them in a proficient manner and provide them with necessary treatments and preventions. Helping your children with their allergies at school can go a long way towards building their confidence and helping them to have a great year in their school. Food allergies in children usually occur due to immunoglobin E antibodies that recognize a substance entering the body, which further causes release of chemical histamines. Histamines further cause inflammation, leading to allergic reactions upon inhalation, ingestion and skin contact.

Children cannot express themselves verbally and many a times they suffer from severe disorders, which are usually not understood by the parents. Allergies are also quite common in children, which can be a major concern for parents especially of their child is suffering from food allergy. Children are not well aware on the types of allergic reactions that can occur in their body due to different types of food items and hence food allergy at school becomes a major concern for parents. Therefore, it is important to follow a few guidelines that can keep you relieved from the reactions that your child might be suffering from.

•    Making the school’s personnel aware about your child’s food allergy is quite important. It can be a good idea to meet some of the key people at the school that stay near to your child especially if your child’s allergy is moderate or severe. It is also important to make contact with the school nurse, teachers for the year and also the school secretary and junior staff.

•    Keep in touch with any one of your child’s class buddy. Explain that in case of any kind of medical emergency, the child should immediately call for help. This friend would simply agree to tell an adult about the disorder that your child is suffering from.

•    It is also important to consult your physician and ask them for a prescription that can be helpful in case of severe attack of food allergy at school. This can be helpful for the child as well as the school management to provide necessary medications that can simply calm down the situation.

Following these simple steps can keep you relieved for your child allergy during those school hours.
